{"id":10422,"date":"2024-01-29T17:31:43","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T15:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ditsong.org.za\/en\/?p=10422"},"modified":"2024-01-29T17:31:43","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T15:31:43","slug":"nederlandsche-zuid-afrikaansche-vereniging-scholarship-from-1884","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ditsong.org.za\/en\/nederlandsche-zuid-afrikaansche-vereniging-scholarship-from-1884\/","title":{"rendered":"NEDERLANDSCHE-ZUID-AFRIKAANSCHE VERENIGING SCHOLARSHIP FROM 1884"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><i>By: Jaco Schoonraad,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Site Curator: <\/i><b><i>DITSONG Kruger Museum and DITSONG: Sammy Marks Museum<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">In 1884\/1885 the <i>Nederlandsche-Zuid-Afrikaansche Vereniging<\/i> (Netherlands-South African Association) granted a scholarship to young boys between the ages of 9 and 15 years old to study in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">By the end of June 1887 a few boys arrived in London with the <i>Dunvegan Castle<\/i> (steam ship) and were welcomed by Mr G.J.Th. Beelaerts van Blokland, a <span class=\"s1\">civil servant in the Ministry of Justice, in The Hague since 1883.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">These boys, from the South African Republic (ZAR) were granted a \u2018more advanced\u2019 education to the inadequate schooling of the ZAR at the time.
