Born on March 16,1959, in the modest town of Tzaneen, Limpopo, Mboweni rose from humble beginnings to become one of South Africa’s most respected public figures. Mboweni’s journey began with studies in commerce at the University of the North before he went into exile in Lesotho. Fondly nicknamed the Duke of the Duchy of Magoebaskloof, Mboweni was a man of enduring legacy – a self-made social media star and ambassador for Modjadjikloof’s culinary traditions.

Figure 1. Mboweni’s leadership skills earned him a position as Deputy Head of the Department of Economic Policy in the ANC. Subsequently, Mboweni was appointed as the first black South African Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1998 under President Nelson Mandela’s cabinet.

Mboweni’s most remarkable accomplishment was becoming the first black South African to serve as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, a position he held from 1999 to 2009. On 1 November 2002, he was inaugurated as the first Honorary Colonel of the 1 South African Tank Regiment. During his tenure as Governor, Mboweni also served as an International Adviser to Goldman Sachs International and as Chairman of AngloGold Ashanti. In 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed him as Minister of Finance, a role in which he prioritized restoring fiscal discipline and combating corruption. Mboweni served as the Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2021.

A Voice of Integrity and Humour

Outside of his official roles, Tito Mboweni was known for his distinctive personality, sharp humour, and relatable charm. He connected with the public, not only through his professional achievements but also through his personal stories, his well-loved social media posts, and his passion for cooking — most famously his signature “Mboweni Chicken” dishes. His interactions with people were filled with warmth and genuine interest, often infusing humour and humanity into the conversations about national issues.

Honours and Recognition

2001 – Awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Economics by the University of Natal.

2002 – Inaugurated as the Honorary Colonel of the 1 South African Tank Regiment.

2010 – Conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Economic Science by the University of Cape Town.

2015– Appointed Honorary Professor at the School of Economic and Business Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand.

2017 – Immortalised in popular culture when South African rapper Cassper Nyovest released the hit song Tito Mboweni, featuring Mboweni’s name 75 times in the 4-minute track.

Mboweni’s legacy is marked by his commitment to economic reform, labour rights and Pan-Africanism. Sadly, Mboweni passed away on October 12, 2024, at the age 65. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), a global agency focused on driving sustainable economic progress. Mboweni also held directorships in various companies. President Ramaphosa described Mboweni as “a leader and compatriot who served our nation as an activist, economic policy innovator and champion of labour rights”. In recognition of his contributions to the liberation struggle and his historic appointment as the youngest minister post-1994 by former President Nelson Mandela, Mboweni was accorded a Special Official Funeral Service Category 2.

Mboweni’s passing is a reminder of the value of steadfast dedication to public service, the courage to confront complex challenges, and the power of humility and humour in leadership. His contributions have left an indelible mark on South Africa’s history and on all who were fortunate to know him or witness his journey. As South Africa reflects on his extraordinary life, his legacy will continue to inspire new generations of leaders, economists, and citizens who, like him, believe in the power of a vision-driven life dedicated to the service of others. May his spirit rest in peace.

References

Fezeka Dzanibe.
