THE NAVAL VOLLEY GUN OF HENRY NOCK: A FEARSOME BUT FLAWED INNOVATION

The Nock Gun

 

In the annals of firearm development, few weapons have garnered as much curiosity and dramatic reputation as the Henry Nock seven-barrelled volley gun. Designed in the late 18th century, this formidable weapon was a response to the British Royal Navy’s desire for greater firepower during shipboard combat. Though short-lived in its practical use, the Nock gun remains an important example of the experimentation and engineering ambition that characterised the age of black powder.

 

The Nock volley gun was developed around 1779 by British inventor Henry Nock and brought to prominence through a design suggested by James Wilson, a gunsmith. At the time, the Royal Navy faced the challenge of repelling enemy boarders and suppressing mutinies within the confined and often chaotic spaces of a ship’s deck. The idea was to deliver a devastating blast of multiple projectiles simultaneously, thus breaking up tightly packed enemy ranks in a single discharge.

 

The resulting weapon featured seven barrels arranged in a hexagonal cluster – six barrels surrounding a central one. All seven barrels were fired simultaneously using a single flintlock mechanism that ignited a priming pan linked to each barrel via small touchholes (Fig.1). All barrels fired simultaneously, hence the term “volley gun.” A black powder charge is placed in each barrel, firing round lead balls, typically one per barrel. Reloading involves pouring powder and ramming a ball into each barrel separately. The gun was made entirely of metal and was heavy, weighing between 6 kg and 9 kg, depending on the variant.

 

The Nock gun was primarily intended for use by Royal Navy sailors in the fighting tops, which were raised platforms in the masts, from which marksmen could shoot down onto the enemy deck. A single sailor armed with a Nock gun could fire a volley of seven musket balls in one devastating shot, theoretically inflicting heavy casualties or causing panic.

The goal was to disrupt boarding parties of enemy crews; a single blast could clear a gangway or defend a narrow passage. The concept of rapid suppression or crowd control during naval skirmishes made this weapon an appealing experimental tool for navy soldiers, who often faced brutal face-to-face combat if an enemy crew boarded the ship, as depicted in the painting by Denis Dighton (Fig.2). The volley gun was also effective in repelling mutinies and attacks in confined spaces. The gun’s thunderous discharge and wide shot spread were designed to frighten and disorient enemies, relying more on psychological impact than tactical advantage.

Despite its innovative design, the Nock gun proved deeply flawed in practice. Its recoil was extremely severe. The simultaneous discharge of all seven barrels produced such violent kickback that it often dislocated the shoulder of the shooter. In the cramped and unstable environment of a ship, especially high up in the fighting tops, this made the weapon not only difficult to use but also dangerous.

 

Additionally, although the volley fire was impressive, the intense flash from all seven barrels could ignite rigging and sails, posing an unacceptable risk on wooden ships. Furthermore, reloading the weapon was cumbersome, which limited its effectiveness in extended battles. There were several critical flaws, including a lack of precision, as the volley spread widely and quickly lost energy. The weapon was only effective at a range of 18 to 27 meters. Additionally, it was too heavy for average sailors to handle easily, making it awkward to aim or carry in battle, especially when positioned aloft.

 

Even an experienced soldier firing seven .46 calibre barrels at once will suffer an ear-shattering thunderclap, accompanied by a blinding flash of orange flame and thick, acrid smoke. It is inevitable that, after the shots, the soldier will experience temporary deafness or ringing in the ears, along with coughing from the smoke. For these reasons, the gun was not widely adopted. Although around 600 were manufactured and issued to the Royal Navy, they saw limited action and were eventually phased out.

 

Although the Nock volley gun was not a practical success, it left a lasting impression on the history of firearms and captured the public imagination. The Nock gun gained renewed fame through fiction and film. It was notably wielded by the character Sergeant Patrick Harper (played by Daragh O’Malley) in the Sharpe television series (1993-2008), based on Bernard Cornwell’s novels. It became something of a curiosity, an emblem of the experimental zeal and mechanical daring of late 18th-century weapon designers.

 

The Henry Nock volley gun stands as a compelling example of innovation that ultimately fell short of its promise. It embodied the desire for overwhelming firepower and novel engineering during a time of constant naval warfare, but its impracticalities limited its effectiveness. Though it never became a staple of naval armament, the Nock gun’s legacy endures as a striking reminder of both the ambitions and the perils of military invention in the age of sail.
